    First cousin once removed of Chilean President Salvador Allende
    Wrote the novels 'The House of the Spirits' (1982), 'Eva Luna' (1987), 'Daughter of Fortune' (1999), 'City of the Beasts' (2002), 'Kingdom of the Golden Dragon' (2004) and 'Forest of the Pygmies' (2005)
    Became a US citizen (2003)
    She is often erroneously described as Salvador Allende's niece.
    She was fired from a job translating romance novels into Spanish for making unauthorized changes to the dialogue to make the female characters sound more intelligent.
    She begins writing all her books on January 8 after lighting candles and meditating.
    She read her late daughter's love letters and said they were 'pornographic' and 'wonderful.'
    She began writing novels when Pablo Neruda told her she had too much imagination to be a journalist.
    She had to flee Chile after receiving death threats following the coup that brought Augusto Pinochet to power.
    She was one of the flag bearers at the Torino Winter Olympics (2006).
    The Times of London said she created 'an enchanted world unlike anything else in contemporary fiction.'
