    Birth name is Gillespie V. Montgomery
    He supported segregation.
    Although he was a Democrat, he was known as a 'boll weevil' for his frequent opposition to the policies of the Democrats.
    He always stood for strong defense.
    He supported most civil rights bills after 1976.
    He was the most outspoken member when it came to veterans' rights.
    He authored the Montgomery G.I. Bill, which continues to benefit people in the armed services by giving them money to pay for their college educations.
    He served for fourteen years as the Chairman of the Veterans' Affairs Committee.
    He was friendly and one of the most well-liked Congressmen.
    Unlike many Southern Democrats, he was consistent with his conservatism.
