The Resume

    (June 28, 1922-April 3, 2016)
    Born in Brooklyn, New York
Drama director for radio station KPFA in Berkeley, California (1963-91)
Provided the voices of Admiral Ackbar and Bib Fortuna in ‘The Return of the Jedi’ (1983)
Reprised his role as Admiral Ackbar in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ (2015)

Why he might be annoying:

He avoided on-screen appearances due to stage fright.
He never saw the original ‘Star Wars.’
He auditioned unsuccessfully for the voice of Yoda.
His Admiral Ackbar line ‘It’s a trap!’ has been endlessly parodied.
He was not listed in the original credits of ‘Return of the Jedi.’

Why he might not be annoying:

He served in the US Navy during World War II.
He was a mentor to several sound engineers, such as two-time Oscar winner Randy Thom.
He came up with Admiral Ackbar’s voice immediately after being shown a picture of the character: ‘I saw the face, and I knew what he must sound like.’
He politely answered every request for an autograph that he received in the mail.
The San Francisco Chronicle noted, ‘While he never became a fan of Star Wars, through correspondence he became a fan of the fans…. He enjoyed their passion and sincerity.’
