    She was rejected by David Selznick after her only screen test with sound.
    She ended her friendship with Noel Coward after he based a character in 'Hay Fever' on her.
    She was an alcoholic, who called her ten-year binge after her second husband's death 'the longest wake in history.'
    Although she started as a sentimental comedienne, she scored her biggest triumph in Tennessee Williams' drama 'The Glass Menagerie.'
    Tennessee Williams said, 'I consider her the greatest artist of her profession that I have known.'
    In the acting text 'A Challenge for the Actor,' Uta Hagen called her 'my inspiration' and her 'idol.'
    Other admirers included Helen Hayes, Katharine Hepburn and Martin Landau.
