    She was petulant, childish and spoiled.
    She embarrassed her Naval officer husband, Thomas Massie, by falling down drunk at a military social function.
    Her rape allegations were proved false and heightened racial tensions on Hawaii.
    After the suspects were released on mistrial, her mother, Grace Hubbard Fortescue, and husband kidnapped and murdered one of the men, Joseph Kahahawai.
    Her mom and husband were convicted of manslaughter, but their sentences were commuted to only one hour in jail.
    Her husband married her only for social connections.
    Clarence Darrow was retained to defend her relatives.
    She may have suffered from an undiagnosed mental illness.
