    He tried to turn Luciano Pavarotti into a movie star by directing ‘Yes, Giorgio.’
    His parents were Protestant missionaries in Japan.
    He directed the original television broadcasts of ‘Twelve Angry Men’ (1954) and ‘The Caine Mutiny Court Martial’ (1955).
    He won three Emmy Awards.
    He is the namesake for an annual award presented by The American Film Institute.
