    Her father left his family when she was three and her stepfather died when she was fourteen.
    She tried to put herself through university by working at a beauty parlor.
    She believed housewives often don’t get the respect they deserved.
    She wrote openly and positively about sex.
    Her first book received little press but became very popular by word of mouth.
    ‘The Total Woman’ was 1974’s top selling nonfiction book.
