Why Madison, Wisconsin might be annoying:

Voters name the town after a president who had nothing to do with Wisconsin.
It barely missed being named 'The City of Four Lakes.'
During the Civil War it served as a prison camp for captured Confederate soldiers.
Charles Lindbergh attended UW, but got crappy grades and dropped out (1920).
Otis Redding died in Madison when his plane crashed in Lake Monona (December 10, 1967).
A strike at the UW campus to promote the rights for African American students and faculty resulted in the summoning of the Wisconsin National Guard (1969).
George McGovern's alcoholic daughter, Teresa, died of exposure in Madison after passing out in the snow after an all night bender (1994).
The UW campus has a 'party town' reputation (its nickname is 'MadTown') where beer soaked mayhem has caused skirmishes with police and the cancellation of MTV's proposed filming of the annual State Street Halloween Party.
It is the namesake for the yellow lab who portrays Vincent the dog on Lost.

The satirical 'Onion' newspaper was founded here (1988).
The Smashing Pumpkins recorded their debut album, 'Gish,' in Madison (1991).
It's home to several structures designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
'Money' magazine named it the best place to live in the U.S. (1996).
Its ornate capitol building, the only dwelling with a granite dome in the U.S., was designated a National Historic Landmark (2001).
It was named the healthiest city to live in by 'Men's Journal' magazine (2004).
'Forbes' magazine named it one of the 'Ten Best Metros for Business and Careers' (2005).
Some famous folk born in Madison include Chris Farley, Tyne Daly, Chris Noth, Bradley Whitford and Eric Heiden.
Some famed alumni of UW include Joan Cusack, Jane Kaczmarek, Steve Miller, Boz Scaggs, Bud Selig, Greta Van Susteren, Eudora Welty, Joyce Carol Oates and Stephen Ambrose.
