    Born in Chilesburg, Kentucky
    Winner, Kentucky Derby (1901, 1902)
    After an accident involving 4 horses at the starting gate, he was suspended from riding for a year.
    Scheduled to ride his usual horse, he accepted $3000 to ride for another owner in the Futurity Stakes of 1903.
    His venality ruined his reputation, forcing a move to Europe.
    He was one of the most successful jockeys of the early 20th century, garnering over 2500 championships.
    His interracial marriage to European royalty caused a scandal.
    During the 1917 Russian Revolution, he assisted in helping over 200 horses escape certain death.
    In 2004, he was inducted into the National Museum's Racing Hall of Fame for his prodigious career.
    As of 2012, he remained the final African American to jockey a Kentucky Derby winner.
