    Born in Miharu, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan
    Founded Joshi-Tohan, the first mountaineering club for women in Japan (1969)
    First woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest (May 16, 1975)
    First woman to climb the Seven Summits (the highest peak on each continent; completed in 1992)

Why she might be annoying:

    The expedition she led on Everest was described as all-female, but the Sherpas who supported the expedition – including digging the women out of the snow after an avalanche – were men.
    She was uncomfortable with the attention she received after climbing Mount Everest.
    She said she would have liked to have climbed more with her family, but it was hard for her and her husband to schedule vacations together.

Why she might not be annoying:

    She defied the stereotypical role for Japanese women.
    She survived being buried by an avalanche on Mount Everest two weeks before climbing to the summit.
    She joined the Himalayan Adventure Trust, a group dedicated to preserving the environment around Mount Everest, and participated in several ‘cleanup climbs’ in the Himalayas.
    She continued climbing after being diagnosed with peritoneal cancer.
