    Wrote the graphic novel ‘Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?’ (2014)

Why she might be annoying:

    Because cartooning did not seem like a ‘real art,’ she majored in painting at the Rhode Island School of Design, but she admits that she ‘sort of sucked’ at it.
    She signs her work ‘R. Chast,’ which she says is ‘not in honor of R. Crumb, but not not in honor of him, either.’.
    Fans of her work admit that it is hard to describe what makes it funny.
    She has a phobia about balloons.
    When she moved from New York City to suburban Connecticut and had to learn to drive, ‘The first few lessons were torture.’

    Lee Lorenz, art director of ‘The New Yorker,’ said of her cartoons, ‘They weren't like anything else we had published. ... It was a whole new way of looking at life through a comic lens.’
    ‘Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?’ won a National Book Award in the autobiography category and was chosen as one of the ten best books of the year by the New York Times.
