Their reliance on incomplete databases has led them to repeatedly arrest U.S. citizens by mistake.
They oversaw the deportation of a record 2.4 million immigrants during the Obama administration.
They have been tasked with enforcing the Trump administration's zero tolerance policy towards undocumented migrant families.
This included enforcing the separation of migrant children from their parents at the border, which sparked nationwide outrage.
Many have likened I.C.E. detention centers to prisons (more extreme comparisons have been made to interment/concentration camps)
It is one of the least popular government agencies, with the trending hashtag #AbolishICE gaining widespread support from lawmakers.
They have been accused of downplaying sexual abuse complaints from detainees, investigating only a small minority of those submitted.

They were formed largely in response to the September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks.
Although primarily focused on immigration, their work has extended to curbing human trafficking, child exploitation, sex tourism, and gang warfare.
Lawmakers have pointed out that the poor conditions at I.C.E. detention facilities are more a result of inadequate funding than inhumanity on part of the officers.
The Abolish ICE movement is rather pointless, considering that Customs and Border Protection is the agency actually responsible for border enforcement laws (thereby meaning that the controversial practices would just continue through them instead of outright ending).
The attacks on the agency resulted in officers and their families being harassed in public on multiple occasions.
Googling them by their abbreviation alone inevitably turns up images of well ... 'Ice' (Ice cubes, Icebergs, Ice Tea, etc.)
