He referred to Republicans as 'assholes' during a speech at UC-Berkeley.
Glenn Beck accused him of being a 'neo-Marxist.'
Critics say his 'eco-capitalism' green job movement was more about him wanting to make a profit than his concern for the environment.
He supported the innocence claim of convicted murderer Mumia Abu-Jamal.

He was the first African-American author to write a New York Times best-seller regarding environmentalism.
He worked with several groups to promote civil rights and social justice.
Time Magazine named him as one of their 100 Most Influential People (2009).
He drove bat-shit crazy people, like Glenn Beck, absolutely nuts.
He was active in getting advertisers to boycott Beck's show after Beck called President Obama a 'racist' (2009).
He graduated Yale Law School.
