Auto Racer

The Resume

    (August 8, 1953- )
Born in Upton-upon-Severn, England, United Kingdom
Birth name is Nigel Ernest James Mansell
    31 Grand Prix victories
    Formula One World Champion (1992)
CART Indy Car World Series Champion (1993)
Drove for Lotus (1980-84), Williams (1985-88), Ferrari (1989-90), and McLaren (1995)
International Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee (2005)

Why he might be annoying:

He is a Super Mario lookalike!
He had a rivalry with F1 racer Nelson Piquet.
He can't seem to decide whether he wants to shave off his trademark moustache or not (wax on! wax off!)
He left F1 for Indy Racing after a public dispute with Frank Williams over his signing Alain Prost, only to wear out his welcome in America and return to Formula two years later.
When he was knocked out of the Indianapolis 500, he stormed out of the track hospital, refusing medical care (1994).
When a reporter asked if he had spoken with the driver who had crashed into him, he answered: 'You speak to him' and shoved the camera away (he left IndyCar racing shortly thereafter).
Mario Andretti said: 'I guess if Ronnie Peterson was the best team-mate I ever had, Nigel Mansell was the worst ... I have a lot of respect for him as a driver, but not as a man.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He is one of the most successful British Formula One drivers of the twentieth century.
He was the first person to win the Indy CART title in his debut season.
He held the record for the most poles set in a single season until the record was broken by Sebastian Vettel, in 2011.
He was awarded the title of BBC Sports Personality of the Year in both 1986 and 1992 (one of only three people to be named twice).
He is one of the few Formula One racing greats not to come from a wealthy family or to have his career bankrolled by a sponsoring giant.
In his early karting days, he ran on a 25 lawn-mower engine which fell off in his first race. He simply picked it up and went on racing.
He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire), and later Commander, for his services to motor sports and children's causes.
He was the last driver to be picked personally by Enzo Ferrari to drive for him before his death.
