Wrote over 200 novels and plays
Best known novels include 'The Count of Monte Cristo,' 'The Three Musketeers' and 'The Man in the Iron Mask'

Why he might be annoying:

He employed a small army of ghostwriters, leading to the saying in France, 'Everybody has read some of Dumas, but nobody has read all of Dumas -- including Dumas.'
His writing earned him a great deal of money, but he was constantly broke due to high living and spending on his mistresses.
He fled from Paris to Belgium to escape his creditors (1851).
His novel 'The Fencing Master' (1840) was banned in Russia.
He had at least three children out of wedlock.
His name looks like it should be pronounced 'dumb-ass.'

Why he might not be annoying:

His father died when he was four.
His paternal grandmother was a black slave.
Partly because of racism, he was not taken seriously by the critics of his day.
He was reburied at the Pantheon in Paris alongside France's other luminaries (2002).
His stories have been translated into over 100 languages and inspired more than 200 films.
