Why he might be annoying
He was an officer in the Japanese military during World War II.
He was expelled from the Korean army for belonging to a Communist cell (1948).
He took power in a military coup.
After winning several close elections, he declared a state of emergency (1972), dissolved parliament, suspended the constitution, and ruled as a dictator.
Thousands of Koreans were imprisoned for years for criticizing him at work or in bars.
Why he might not be annoying
During the Korean War, he rejoined the army and rose to the rank of general.
He turned Korea from an undeveloped country into an industrial and economic power.
During his presidency, per capita incomes increased tenfold.
His wife was killed during an assassination attempt against him by a North Korean agent (August 15, 1974).
