    He always wore a plaid flannel shirt.
    He was neurotic.
    He was compulsively self-obsessed.
    He tried to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge in 2002.
    His solo piece 'Black Spot' was canceled after his suicide attempt.
    His body was found dead in the East River two months after he disappeared on January 10, 2004.
    He was an accomplished live performer, only using a desk and a glass of water as props.
    His one-man storytelling career began when he would give his co-workers a blow-by-blow account of the day's events when he was working as a dishwasher.
    Many of his monologues were made into book form and several were turned into films.
    He won an Obie for 'Swimming to Cambodia.'
    He turned his serious eye problem into a book called 'Gray's Anatomy' and later into a film.
    In an interview, he provided an epitaph for his tombstone: 'An American Original: Troubled, Inner-Directed and Cannot Type' (1997).
    His battle with depression began after his mother committed suicide.
    A car accident in 2001 left him in poor health and he never recovered from it emotionally.
