Why she might be annoying:

She was a smoker.
She was a Communist.
Two of her sisters were Nazi sympathizers.
She formed a pop group, Decca and the Dectones, and recorded a cover version of the Beatles' 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer.'
She defended the Soviet invasion of Hungary (1956) as necessary 'to preserve a socialist system against what looks like a fascist coup.'
When 'Time' magazine wrote that Mitford showed 'a depraved interest in what is morally unsavory or scandalous,' she said, 'I fear that does rather describe me.'

She eventually quit the Communist Party.
One of her sisters, Nancy Mitford, was also a famous writer.
Her book 'The American Way of Death,' revealed the costly, deceptive practices of the funeral industry.
She was known as a wildly funny writer.
Her first husband was killed in World War II.
Her second husband was a labor lawyer.
She became a US citizen. She worked with the Civil Rights Conference in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent the execution of Willie McGee, a black man convicted on dubious evidence of raping a white woman.
She twice attended civil rights rallies that were attacked by the Ku Klux Klan.
'The American Way of Death' criticized the use of unscrupulous business tactics to take advantage of the bereaved.
Her cremation and funeral cost a total of $475.
Her motto was, 'You may not be able to change the world, but you can at least embarrass the guilty.'
