Baseball Player
    (February 2, 1923-June 6, 2018)
    Born in Germantown, Illinois
    Birth name was Albert Schoendienst
Second baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals (1945-56,1961-63), New York Giants (1956-57) and Milwaukee Braves (1957-60)
    .983 career fielding average
    4616 putouts, 5243 assists, 1368 double plays
Manager of the St. Louis Cardinals (1965-76,1980,1990)
    1,041-955 win-loss record
    Ten-time All-Star (1946,1948-55,1957)
    #2 retired by the Cardinals
Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame (1989)
He skipped school a lot to go fishing and hunting before dropping out at age 16.
He almost lost an eye when he was hit in the face by a nail while working with the Civilian Conservation Corps.
He had a shallow shoulder socket, which caused his shoulder to occasionally pop out from the joint.
His eye and shoulder got him an early discharge from the army (1945), but oddly did not keep him from becoming a pro athlete.
Stan Musial said he had 'the greatest pair of hands I've ever seen.'
He led NL second basemen in fielding percentage seven times, setting a season record (broken three decades later by Ryne Sandberg) of .9934 in 1956.
He came back to baseball after having part of a lung removed due to tuberculosis (1959).
As a manager, he was known for his even temperament.
Joe Torre cited him as a influence, saying, 'One thing I learned about managing from Schoendienst was to treat each player fairly.'
