Why he might be annoying:

He played the ukulele.
His original band, The Tones, was turned down for American Bandstand.
He enlisted in the National Guard but went absent without leave (AWOL) to become a busker.
He didn’t compose ‘Mr. Bojangles’ to honor Bill Robinson (as the Sammy Davis Jr. version suggests) but rather an aging white man who used the alias to protect his identity in a racially-segregated prison.

Why he might not be annoying:

Dozens of artists – most notably the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – covered ‘Mr. Bojangles.’
He had almost no issues with performing other songwriters' material.
He was nicknamed ‘the Jimmy Buffett of Texas’ (they co-authored ‘Railroad Lady’).
Many of country music’s biggest names attend his annual birthday party in Austin.
His son, also a musician in his own right, is a common fixture at such parties.
