    Born in Newton, North Carolina
    ESPN commentator for NASCAR, the Indy Racing League (IRL) and college football
    Currently the play-by-play announcer for ESPN's NASCAR coverage
    Has previously served as a pit reporter for ESPN/ABC's NASCAR and Indy 500 coverage
    Licensed medical doctor and received MD from Wake State University
    He seemed to struggle in his first year as a play-by-play announcer.
    He got his start in broadcasting after winning a local radio contest in high school.
    He gave up his career as an emergency room physician to become an ESPN broadcaster.
    He resuscitated racers Don Marmor and Rusty Wallace after they suffered separate accidents and were knocked unconscious., and also helped the rescue team at Ernie Irvan's near-fatal crash in 1994.
    When an intern fainted during a luncheon he was addressing, he immediately stopped his speech and helped revive her before she was taken to a local hospital.
    He made the North Carolina State football team as walk-on backup quarterback, and later graduated magna cum laude.
