Wrote and directed the films 'Truly Madly Deeply (1991),' 'The English Patient (1996),' 'The Talented Mr Ripley (1999)' and 'Cold Mountain (2003)'

Why he might be annoying:

His parents were famous owners of an ice cream factory.
After reading the entire 'English Patient' novel in one sitting (before directing the film adaptation) he became disorientated and forgot where he was.
He feuded with Jude Law while filming 'Cold Mountain,' not wanting to let Law take paternity leave for the birth of his child.

Why he might not be annoying:

Prior to directing, he worked as a university professor and wrote several plays including 'Made In Bangkok' for which he won a London Theater Critics Award in 1994.
Classy adaptations of complex novels have become his trademark.
He was appointed CBE in the 2001 Queen's Birthday Honours list.
He won the 1997 Best Director Oscar for 'The English Patient.'
He won a Best Screenplay BAFTA for 'Truly Madly Deeply' in 1992 and a Best Film BAFTA for 'The English Patient' in 1997.
He won an Outstanding Directorial Achievement DGA award in 1997 for 'The English Patient.'
He collaborated with Jim Henson on the acclaimed series 'The Storyteller.'
