    Served with the 13th Aero Squadron during World War I
    Set an aviation endurance record of 150 hours in the plane 'The Question Mark' (January 1-7, 1929)
    Named Commander of US Strategic Air Forces in Europe (1943-45) and US Strategic Air Forces in the Pacific (1945)
    Named first Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force (1947-48)
    National Commander of the Civil Air Patrol (1948-59)
    Military affairs editor for 'Newsweek' (1948-61)

Why he might be annoying:

    Because people pronounced his name 'spats' instead of 'spahtz,' he inserted an extra 'a.'
    He was uncommunicative, with one friend calling him 'a miser with words.'
    During a tour of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, he observed 'It would make a fine dirigible hanger.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He explained his taciturnity by noting, 'I never learned anything while talking.'
    He and Ruth Harrison were married for 57 years until his death.
    During just three weeks of combat in WWI, he shot down three enemy planes and earned the Distinguished Service Cross.
    He proposed that the bombing campaign in Europe should concentrate on Germany's oil industry, which Albert Speer and other German leaders later said was critical in their defeat.
    Dwight David Eisenhower said Spaatz and Omar Bradley were the two American generals who made the greatest contribution to victory in Europe.
