    He continued to paint while exiled in Belgium due to friends supplying him with painting materials.
    His stark portraits are said to illustrate the bleakness of the Jewish experience under the Nazi regime.
    His entire family--wife, parents, brothers, sister-in-law, and niece--were all killed.
    His art survived and is displayed at the Felix Nussbaum Haus, which opened in his hometown in 1998.
