Ryder's explanation of the band name: 'Well, Kermit's black, and grapes are my favorite fruit.'
The cover of their first album featured terrorist Carlos the Jackal.
They failed to appear at the Doncaster Dome after a backstage brawl between Ryder and the rest of the band (December, 1997).
Ryder then cancelled all the band's scheduled 1998 concerts as he pursued a film career.
Their first album debuted at number one on the British charts and went platinum in the UK.
They had a funky and eclectic sound.
The Independent wrote, 'Whereas every other rock band today bases itself around feelings of 20th-century malaise, Black Grape are the party Prince described in '1999.''
