Mayor

The Resume

    (May 28, 1969-March 22, 2016)
    Born in Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada
    Mayor of Toronto (December 1 2010- )
    Etobicoke City Councilor (2000-2011)
Cohost with brother Doug Ford of weekly radio show ‘The City With Rob Ford’
Appealed and won a conflict-of-interest ruling involving misuse of city resources to support his football charity that would have forced him to step down (January 27, 2013)
Subject of international coverage after a report on US tabloid site Gawker about a video allegedly showing him smoking crack cocaine (May 16, 2013)
Gawker started a fundraising campaign to raise $200 000 to buy video from the drug dealers who made it (Goal reached on May 27, 2013)
Stripped of most of his mayoral powers by the Toronto City Council, a decision he plans to legally challenge (November 15, 2013)
Took a leave of absence and entered rehab when a second video of him smoking crack emerged (May 1, 2014)
Withdrew from 2014 mayoral race shortly before being diagnosed with liposarcoma, a rare cancer (September 17, 2014)

Why he might be annoying:

He has a long-running feud with the left-leaning newspaper ‘The Toronto Star’ and the city’s unions.
He lied about being caught by the Florida police with marijuana in 1999 but later acknowledged the story was true.
He denied being thrown out of a hockey game for drunken disorderly behavior, only to later, again, admit he’d been lying. (2006)
He called an Italian councilor a ‘Gino-boy’ (2002) and referred to Asians as ‘Orientals’ who ‘worked like dogs.’ (2008)
He gave the finger to a mother and her child after being reprimanded for using his phone while driving. (2011)
When a well-known comedian showed up in his driveway with a toy sword, he called the police three times. (2011)
He called the press ‘a bunch of maggots’ on his radio show following allegations his family had been involved in the drug trade in the 1980s. (May 26, 2013)
He is an even more notorious Toronto mayor than Mel Lastman.
He admitted he once smoked crack (November 5, 2013).
Weeks after swearing off alcohol, a video emerged of him drunkenly rambling in a Jamaican accent. (January 21, 2014)

Why he might not be annoying:

He paid for all of his work-related expenses out of his own pocket while a city councilor.
He is as popular with suburbanites as he is disliked by downtowners.
He kept his campaign promise to stop the ‘gravy train’ and significantly reduced city spending.
He was mocked about his weight by the alternative press.
The unverified claims about his crack use and his family’s drug dealing were made by anonymous sources.
He was devoted to volunteer football coaching with underprivileged teenagers. (The crack accusations led to his dismissal.)
He apologized the next day for calling journalists maggots.
