Composer
    (July 18, 1872-September 25, 1916)
Born in Prague, Bohemia, Czech Republic
Composer of ‘Florentiner Marsch,’ ‘Einzug der Gladiatoren,’ ‘Mississippi River,’ ‘Stale vpred (Sempre avanti),’ ‘Attila,’ and ‘Winter Storm’
Bassoon player for the 49th Austro-Hungarian Regiment band
Bandmaster for the 86th Infantry Regiment (Sarajevo) and 92nd Infantry Regiment (Theresienstadt)
Uh, want to anagram that name?
You’ll probably find better coverage of his life on a Czech or German website.
A French-Canadian composer actually arranged the March of the Gladiators under a smaller-scale band, under the title ‘Thunder and Blazes.’
His band and music publishing company, started just before WWI, would not survive the privations of the war (nor did he).
He was a student of Dvorak, among others.
Almost anyone who’s ever seen a circus clown can easily identify the ‘Gladiators’ hook (which is also on Yakety Sax).
His interest in Roman history served as the inspiration for his most famous ‘march.’
He was nicknamed the Bohemian Sousa for his military marches.
His repertoire also included polkas and waltzes — more than 300 total.
