    Born in Muncie, Indiana
    Quarterback at Western Michigan University (1917-1918) and Notre Dame (1920-1922)
    Assistant football coach at the University of Georgia (1923-1924)
    Backfield football coach at the University of Georgia (1929-1930)
    Head football coach at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (1925-1928) and the University of Alabama (1931-1942, 1944-1946) (No team in 1943)

    Won one National Championship (1934)
    SEC Coach of the Year (1945)
    Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame (1951)
    He shares his name with two baseball players.
    He was known as 'The Obscure Legend' as most people don't remember a lot about him.
    Whenever his name is brought up, people automatically think of 'The Big Hurt.'
    During games, he smoked cigars while on the sidelines.
    He coached the University of Alabama to the Sugar Bowl and lost to Duke, 26-29 in his only Sugar Bowl appearance as a head coach (January 1, 1945).
    He was a friend and roommate of George 'The Gipper' Gipp at Notre Dame.
    Knute Rockne referred him as 'the smartest player he ever coached.'
    He had a good Bowl Game winning record of 5-2.
    He never had a losing season in his head coaching career.
    He coached notable players including Bear Bryant, Don Hutson and Harry Gilmer.
    His declining health forced him to resign from coaching to take care of his daughter who was mentally ill.
    The University of Alabama's football practice fields are named in his honor.
    A statue of him is located outside of Bryant-Denny Stadium at campus of the University of Alabama.
