Outlaw

The Resume

    (1952-October 5, 1998)
    Born in Illinois
Stalked talk show host David Letterman and astronaut Story Musgrave
Served 34 months in jails and psychiatric hospitals for her stalking
    Diagnosed with schizophrenia and erotomania
Committed suicide by kneeling on the tracks in front of an oncoming train

Why she might be annoying:

She lived a transient lifestyle, crashing with friends or in shanties.
She lost custody of the four children from her first marriage to her ex.
She gave up custody to her mother of her youngest child from her second marriage.
She stole a Porsche from Letterman’s driveway (May, 1988).
When she was stopped at the Lincoln Tunnel for not paying the toll, she claimed to be married to Letterman.
She broke into Letterman’s house several times, once leaving behind two cookies and empty bottle of Jack Daniels.
She stripped naked on Musgrave’s lawn, hosed herself down, and screamed his name (1997).
When she was jailed for trespassing on Musgrave’s property, she kicked one guard and threw a cup of urine on another one.
When jailed or hospitalized, she would be prescribed antipsychotic drugs and her condition would improve. After being released, she would decide that since she was feeling fine, she no longer needed to take the drugs and would relapse.

Why she might not be annoying:

Her father and two of her brothers were also schizophrenic.
She made the honor roll in high school.
Part of the reason she would stop taking antipsychotic drugs is that she did not like the physical side effects, notably lethargy and weight gain.
At her last trial, the judge lamented the lack of any legal mechanism to ensure that she received medical help.
Letterman joked about the situation. (For example, a Top Ten list of things to do before switching from NBC to CBS included, ‘Send change of address cards to that woman who breaks into my house.’)
Letterman avoided mentioning her name on the air.
Letterman frequently declined to press charges against her, commenting, ‘I never really felt I was the victim. This woman is the victim – she’s had a very sad life.’
