The Resume

    (March 6, 1834-October 8, 1896)
    Born in Paris, France
    Author and illustrator
    Cartoonist for ‘Punch’ magazine

Why he might be annoying:

He grew up believing his grandparents were aristocrats who fled France during the Revolution; actually, his grandfather was a glass blower who fled France to avoid fraud charges.
He did not graduate high school after failing in Latin.
’Trilby’ featured a thinly-veiled caricature of James McNeill Whistler that prompted the artist to threaten to sue if it was not removed from future editions.
Several critics, including George Orwell, complained about anti-Semitism in the depiction of Svengali, the villain of ‘Trilby.’

Why he might not be annoying:

He switched from painting to drawing after losing the sight in his left eye in his early 20s.
He turned from drawing to writing when his eyesight further deteriorated.
He coined the phrase ‘bedside manner’ in a cartoon about physicians.
’Trilby’ influenced Gaston Leroux’s ‘Phantom of the Opera.’
