The Resume

    (June 15, 1942-October 3, 2006)
    Born in Melbourne, Australia
Won the silver medal in the 200 meters (1968)
Wore a badge from the Olympic Project for Human Rights during the medal ceremony to show support for a protest by medalists Tommie Smith and John Carlos

Why he might be annoying:

The Australian Olympic Committee reprimanded him for his participation in the protest.
Even though he had qualifying times in the 100 and 200 meters, he was passed over for the 1972 Olympics team.
He drank heavily and suffered depression after tearing his Achilles tendon (1985).

Why he might not be annoying:

At the time of his death, his 20.06 seconds from the 1968 Olympics remained the best time in the 200 meters by an Australian athlete.
Smith said, 'He didn't raise a fist -- but he did lend a hand.'
When the organizers of the Sydney Olympics ignored him, US track officials arranged for him to attend as their guest (2000).
Smith and Carlos were pallbearers at his funeral.
