    As an April's Fool joke, he told a radio audience that a planetary alignment would cause a reduction in the Earth's gravity. Listeners were told they would feel a floating sensation if they jumped at 9:47 AM (1976).
    He complained the BBC was being 'ruined' by women (2007).
    He said, 'I used to watch Dr. Who and Star Trek, but they went PC -- making women commanders, that kind of thing. I stopped watching.'
    His fiancee was killed by a bomb during World War II.
    He missed only one episode of 'The Sky at Night' (July, 2004), due to a near-fatal bout of food poisoning.
    At over fifty years, he is the longest-serving TV presenter.
    He was the host for the BBC's coverage of the Apollo moon landings.
    He was an uncredited musical consultant for '2001: A Space Odyssey.'
