    Appeared in 'The Mysterious Island (1929),' 'A Free Soul (1931),' 'Grand Hotel (1932),' 'Captains Courageous (1937),' 'The Valley Of Decision (1945),' 'It's A Wonderful Life (1946)' and 'Key Largo (1948)'
    He came from a family of stage actors, but studied painting in Paris.
    He gave up the stage in the 1920s to go into films.
    He portrayed Scrooge on radio every Christmas.
    He was the brother of Ethel and John Barrymore.
    On stage, he often portrayed John's father, even though he was only four years older.
    Both his daughters died as young children.
    He is credited with discovering Clark Gable.
    Many of the films he appeared in won Oscars.
