Religious Figure

The Resume

    (August 25, 1936-September 12, 2015)
Born in Port au Prince, Haiti
    Biochemist turned houngan (voodoo priest)
Founded the temple Le Peristyle de Mariani outside Port au Prince (1974)
Went into exile in the US (1986-2003)
Founded the Temple of Yehwe in Washington, DC (1996)
Named Ati Nasyonal (Supreme Chief) of the National Confederation of Hatian Vodou (2005)

Why he might be annoying:

He personally slit the throats of a lot of chickens and goats for religious sacrifices.
Vodou purists complained that he was too much of a showman, with ceremonies at Le Peristyle de Mariani being conducted in a manner to attract tourists.
He was frequently accused of having ties to the regime of Jean-Claude 'Baby Doc' Duvalier.
There was speculation that he settled in Washington for his exile -- rather than more voodoo-friendly New Orleans -- because of the large number of former Duvalier officials who had settled in the DC metro area.
He claimed that the outbreaks of violence against voodoo practitioners that occurred after Duvalier's overthrow were part of a deliberate campaign masterminded by the Vatican.
He allegedly opposed literacy programs in Haiti.
Journalist Amy Wilentz in 'The Rainy Season: Haiti Since Duvalier' described him as having 'the oily manner of a man whom you wouldn't want to leave alone with your money or your child.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He studied chemistry at City College of New York and the Sorbonne.
He held a patent on a process to obtain the drug hecogenin from plant leaves.
He had no interest in voodoo until his dying grandfather, a houngan himself, asked him to succeed him.
He said he favored literacy programs generally, but had objected to one that he claimed included anti-voodoo propaganda among its reading materials.
After televangelist Pat Robertson blamed the 2010 earthquake that devastated Port au Prince on Haitians having made 'a pact with the devil' to overthrow the French, he replied, 'I don't know much about him, and I don't think I'm missing much.'
