    Best known for a series of seven novels featuring the character Adrian Mole (1982-2009)
    Also wrote 'The Queen and I' (1992), 'Ghost Children' (1997), and 'Queen Camilla' (2006)

Why she might be annoying:

    She failed her 11+ exams and left school at age 14.
    She wrote in secret for a decade without telling anyone, including her husband.
    She originally called her main character Nigel, but was told by her publisher to change it because the name was too similar to Ronald Searle and Geoffrey Williams' character Nigel Molesworth.

Why she might not be annoying:

    She was Great Britain's best-selling native author of the 1980s.
    She went legally blind (2001) and had to dictate her later novels to her oldest son Sean.
    She suffered renal failure and received a kidney from Sean (2009).
    She called herself 'a deeply serious person who sees most things in a humorous way.'
