Why he might be annoying:

His parents cut him off when he flunked his Paris Academy exams and chose to perform in Belgium nightclubs instead.
Due to its breakout popularity, at one point, nine different versions of 'Soul Makossa' were on the Billboard chart at once.
He filed a lawsuit claiming Michael Jackson had stolen a hook from Soul Makossa for two tracks of Thriller. Jackson later settled the case out of court.
He later sued Rihanna for sampling the same hook in 'Please Don't Stop the Music' (she had requested permission from Jackson who agreed without consulting him) in 2009. The judge ruled this claim to be inadmissible and he withdrew the charges.

Why he might not be annoying:

His father was a Yabassi civil servant but his mother was from the Douala ethnic group, a unique pairing for the period.
As a student in colonial Africa under French rule, he once performed for President Charles De Gaulle during his official visit.
His song became the first track by an African artist to make it on the American charts as a Top 40 hit. It also earned two Grammy nominations.
'Soul Makossa' has been sampled by Kool and the Gang ('Jungle Boogie') and Eddie Murphy ('Boogie in your Butt').
He collaborated with pianist Herbie Hancock and Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.
He introduced the blending of African folk music with contemporary pop, popularizing to the world.
He was diagnosed with COVID-19, making him the first global celebrity to die from the virus.
