Vocalist

The Resume

    (February 5, 1923-March 7, 2013)
Raised in Keithville, Caddo Parish, Louisiana
Albums include ‘Meet Claude King (1962),’ ‘Tiger Woman (1965),’ and ‘I Remember Johnny Horton (1969)’
Singles include ‘Big River Big Man,’ ‘Wolverton Mountain,’ ‘The Burning of Atlanta,’ ‘Sheepskin Valley,’‘Tiger Woman,’ ‘Catch a Little Raindrop’ and ‘All for the Love of a Girl’

Why he might be annoying:

Despite an output of some 30 songs over some 16 years, loyalists of the classic country genre tend to remember him only for ‘Wolverton Mountain’ (1962). If at all.
The farm where he was born would become a suburb of (eventual location of death) Shreveport.
The morning of Horton’s death, they planned to go duck hunting.
He shares his name with a wavy-haired British character actor.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a sailor in the Navy.
Having graduated business college, and probably thinking about an alternate route, he entered the construction industry.
He would become the opening act for Hank Williams — whom he drove around during a Louisiana Hayride stint.
The Governor of Arkansas honored him by naming August 7 ‘Wolverton Mountain Day’ (1981).
He lived to see his 67th wedding anniversary (that’s more than two-thirds of a century, and longer than the combined lives of Horton and Williams).
