Why he might be annoying:

    He worked for the government who sought to keep slavery and break away from the United States.
    He dropped out of school when he was sixteen.
    He was a womanizer.
    He would throw lavish feasts and balls while nearby neighbors were starving.
    It is believed he stole government gold and jewels after they were given to the Treasury.

Why he might not be annoying:

    It is widely believed that Margaret Mitchell used him for the inspiration of Rhett Butler in ‘Gone With the Wind.’
    He resigned from his position after an illness.
    He was described as tall, brave and handsome, with the ‘sweetest smile of any man.’
    He named his best steamer, the Georgiana, after his daughter who was killed.
    He was an incredibly successful shipping and banking magnate.
    At the end of the Civil War he was the South's most successful blockade runner.
