The Resume

    (January 24, 1922-December 25, 2005)
    Born in Brockton, Massachusetts
    Pronounced sock-uh-REE-dees
Psychiatrist, psychoanalyst and teacher who spent the majority of his career studying homosexuality
Son Richard (born 1954) openly gay and White House adviser under President Bill Clinton for gay and lesbian issues (1993-99)
Believed homosexuality could be reversed and disagreed with the 1973 decision of the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders
Co-founded NARTH (National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality) in 1992
Author of 16 books dealing with homosexuality
Winner of the 1987 Sigmund Freud Award (given by the American Society of Psychoanalytic Physicians in recognition of distinguished service to psychiatry and psychoanalytic research) and the 1995 Distinguished Psychoanalyst, Association of Psychoanalytic Psychologists Award (given by the British National Health Service)
Died of heart failure at age 83 in New York City

Why he might be annoying:

He was married four times, thrice divorced.
He claimed about one third of his homosexual patients converted to heterosexuality.
He blamed the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force for leading a letter writing campaign that influenced the APA to remove homosexuality as a mental disorder.
Almost every mental health organization rejects his vision of reparative therapy.

Why he might not be annoying:

He decided at age 13 to become a psychoanalyst after reading a book about Sigmund Freud.
Many wrongly believed him a hypocrite for his work as the father of a gay son, but it was because he couldn't analyze his son due to ethics that he sought to further understand homosexuality.
As a researcher he never viewed homosexuality as sinful or immoral.
His daughter from his first marriage, clinical psychologist Daphne Socarides Stolorow, died in 1991.
