    Its earliest history is known only through legends.
    In the past it was frequently at war with rival city states Patan and Bhaktapur.
    It was a mecca for hippies in the 1960s.
    It was the site of the Nepalese Royal Massacre during which Crown Prince Dipendra killed several family members, including the king, and himself.
