Why he might be annoying:

He beat out Charlie Chaplin for the Best Comedy Direction Oscar.
He replaced Carol Reed on the remake of 'Mutiny on the Bounty' because Reed couldn't get along with Marlon Brando.
He wasn't able to control Brando any better, and the film was a commercial and critical flop.

Why he might not be annoying:

He won the only Oscar ever given for Best Comedy Direction.
He won Oscars for directing both a silent film and a talkie.
'All Quiet on the Western Front' was the first great war film of the sound era and is still regarded as one of the greatest anti-war movies ever made.
Despite all the problems on the 'Mutiny on the Bounty' shoot, he was nominated for the DGA Award for Best Feature Film Director for it.
