John Kay's father was a German Nazi soldier who was killed in Russia one month before his birth.
Michael was 17 years old when he joined the band and dropped out of high school to do so.
After their second break-up, former members of the band unofficially reformed Steppenwolf and started touring. Once John learned of this, he hooked up with Jerry to find and sue them.
John broke up the band twice to pursue a solo career.
After officially reforming in 1980, John changed the band's name to 'John Kay and Steppenwolf.'
John learned of rock and roll by listening to U.S. Armed Forces radio.
The band was named after a Hermann Hesse novel.
They recorded one of the greatest rock and roll anthems ever, 'Born To Be Wild' and recorded one of the best 70's psychedelic songs, 'Magic Carpet Ride.'
They've collectively sold over 25 million records and are still permanent fixtures on classic rock radio.
