    Supreme Khan of the Mongol Empire (September 13, 1229-December 11, 1241)
    Conquered/invaded Persia (1227-1231), Jin Empire (1229-1234), Korea (1231), the Caucasus (1232-1240), Song Empire (1235-1245), Russia (1238), Hungary (1241), Poland (1241), and India (1241)
    He and his brother Chagatai launched a massacre of the residents of Otrar, Kazakhstan (1219-1220).
    He wasted much of his wealth, so high taxes had to be set up to sustain the treasury.
    He became an alcoholic after the death of his brother Tolui.
    The Mongol Empire slightly declined following his death.
    He was Genghis Khan’s favorite son because of his charismatic personality.
    When his brothers Jochi and Chagatai were quarreling about the military strategy on conquering Urgench, he was left with the duty of conquering it (1221).
    He expanded the Mongol Empire to its farthest point in the west.
    His charisma helped keep the Mongol Empire stable.
    He developed the city of Karakorum into a walled city (1235).
    He oversaw the bureaucratization of the Mongol Empire, making it easier to be governed.
    His reign was known as ‘Pax Mongolica’ because he linked communities that had no previous contact through trade routes like the Silk Road and raised the knowledge of an outside world among Europeans.
    Mongolian Airlines named one of its airplanes after him.
