    He was interested in and studied semiotics and existentialism.
    After becoming a medical doctor, he decided he wanted to be a writer.
    It was said that he wrote about 'the dislocation of man in the modern age.'
    The critics love him.
    He was best friends with Shelby Foote.
    'The Moviegoer' won a National Book Award.
    His grandfather, father and mother all committed suicide.
    He won the Laetare Medal from Notre Dame.
    He founded the Fellowship of Southern Writers.
    His writing combined Catholic humanism with existentialism.
    He is considered one of the all-time great Southern writers.
