Formed as a side project by Genesis musician Mike Rutherford
1985 line-up:
Mike Rutherford - guitar, bass, vocals
Paul Young - lead vocals
Paul Carrack - vocals, keyboards, guitar
Adrian Lee - keyboards
Peter Van Hooke - drums
Recorded 'Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground),' 'All I Need Is a Miracle,' 'Taken In,' 'The Living Years,' 'Word of Mouth' and 'Over My Shoulder'
Young died of a heart attack at age 53 (July 17, 2000)

Why they might be annoying:

They use a pretentious '+' instead of an '&' in their name.
He and Phil Collins jockeyed back and forth between Genesis and solo projects until the band officially split in 1998.
Since the band's inception, there have been 32 different members of Mike + the Mechanics.
After Young died, they quit for 4 years, then reformed as Mike + the Mechanics featuring Paul Carrack.

Why they might not be annoying:

They have three Billboard Top 10 hits.
'The Living Years' reached #1 in the U.S. and #2 in the U.K.
'The Living Years' is a song written by Rutherford in tribute to his late father.
They were set for an extended tour in 2000 when Young died suddenly and a devastated Rutherford could not see touring without him.
