A civil libertarian, he has been for decades a fierce defender of free speech.
He wrote a column for fifty years for the Village Voice but was fired when he developed pro-life views.
A highly respected jazz historian and critic, he was the first non-musician to receive the National Endowment for the Arts 'Jazz Master Award.'
He's written almost forty books on a variety of subjects including jazz and civil liberties.
He has repeatedly criticized the ACLU for bailing on free speech issues like supporting university speech codes.
He criticizes the left and the right on free speech matters.
