Military Personnel
    (May 20, 1743-April 7, 1803)
    Born in Cap-Haiten, Haiti
Political and military leader in Haiti's war of independence against France
    Full name: Francois-Dominque Toussaint Loverture
He started of fighting for Spain against France, switched to fighting Spain and Great Britain for France and finally against Napoleonic France.
Although an undoubted military genius, his victories were in large part won by Haiti's brutal climate and yellow fever which killed up to two thirds of the European forces sent against him.
Absolutely nothing is known of his early life.
    He was a terrible speller.
Although considered to have been a 'devout Catholic,' he tolerated and possibly practiced voodoo.
He ruled Haiti in a very dictatorial manner.
As a freed ex-slave he had nothing to gain from a slave rebellion but fought to end slavery anyway.
Although there is no evidence he ever had formal schooling, he was very bright and self-educated; possibly knowing Latin and quite learned in Stoic philosophy.
While attempting to negotiate freedom for Haiti he was betrayed and executed.
He treated prisoners well, preventing the massacres of whites that occurred under his successors.
He was able to train ex-slaves and poor free blacks into a military force that could and did defeat larger, more experienced, and far better European forces.
A man of unquestioned courage, integrity, and ability; he is rightly considered a hero by blacks in the America's especially the Caribbean.
