Why he might be annoying:

He was an egomaniac and a fancy-pants.
He was incredibly rich.
He opposed the British government not for moral reasons, but because it was hurting his (very successful) business.
At first, he was not regarded as a real leader of the American Revolution, just a financier.
He was upset that George Washington became commander-in-chief of the Revolutionary forces instead of himself.
He was a tea smuggler.
His signature on the Declaration of Independence is unbelievably large.
King George III said that any rebel colonist who apologized would be forgiven – except for Hancock and Samuel Adams.

Why he might not be annoying:

Despite his wealth, he was known for his generosity.
He was a good speaker, and a great fundraiser.
He was responsible for creating militias of ‘minutemen’ – the foot soldiers of the Revolution.
He served nine terms as Massachusetts’ governor.
His father died when he was a kid.
He helped the first book by an African-American get published.
His name became synonymous with ‘signature.’
Famous buildings in Boston and Chicago are named after him.
