    Born in France
Protestant denomination founded in 16th Century France based on the teachings of John Calvin
In areas where they were in power they brutally oppressed Catholics, Jews, and other protestants.
They burned down Catholic churches and monasteries, attacked priests and nuns, and dug up bodies of Catholic saints and burned them.
They quickly organized a military that fought against the French government in wars that didn't finally end until 1789.
The origin of the term, 'Hugenot' is not positively know and may come from a Dutch term meaning, 'housemate.'
Many of those who joined them only did so because they opposed France's royal family and reconverted to Catholicism as soon as the tide of war turned against them.
Many of them were highly educated.
They were brutally oppressed themselves and were victimized during terrible massacres at Vassy in 1562 and the infamous Saint Bartholomew's Day Massacre in 1572.
At one time, their numbers included one out of every eight French citizen's.
Many of those who fled abroad did every well for themselves, especially in Germany and the New World.
They endured oppression and still are around 2% of the French population.
