    (November 12, 1840-November 17, 1917)
    Born in Paris, France
    Birth name was Francois-Auguste-Rene Rodin
Notable works include 'The Age of Bronze,' 'The Kiss,' 'The Burghers of Calais,' 'The Thinker,' 'Monument to Victor Hugo' and 'Monument to Balzac'
His applications to the School of Fine Arts were rejected three times.
He used his influence to get the French government to withdraw a commission for a sculpture by his former lover Camille Claudel (1899).
An exhibition of his erotic drawings led to the dismissal of the curator of the Weimar Museum (1906).
He lived with seamstress Rose Beuret most of his life, had a son with her, but did not marry her until two weeks before her death (1917).
His unconventional sculptures of Victor Hugo and Honore de Balzac were so controversial they were not cast in bronze until many years after his death.
His ‘Age of Bronze’ was so lifelike he was accused of having taken a cast from a living model.
‘The Thinker’ and ‘The Kiss’ are two of the most widely recognized sculptures of the 20th century.
The French government considered his work so important that he was given a state-owned studio.
He declared, ‘Every part of the human figure is expressive.’
